How to Properly Refill Your HP 680 Ink Cartridge (And Any Other Cartridge)

Refilling your ink cartridge can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option compared to buying new cartridges. Whether you’re using an HP 680 or another model, the process is generally similar. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you refill your ink cartridge without overfilling it and ensuring optimal performance by cleaning the print head afterward.

Step-by-Step Guide to Refilling Your Ink Cartridge

1. Gather Your Materials

Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary materials:

  • Ink refill kit
  • Syringe
  • Paper towels
  • Gloves
  • Small drill or a sharp tool (if needed to make a hole)
  • Contact cleaner, isopropyl alcohol, or rubbing alcohol
  • Lint-free cloth

2. Prepare the Cartridge

Remove the ink cartridge from the printer and place it on a paper towel to catch any spills. If your cartridge doesn’t already have a refill hole, you’ll need to make one. Most HP 680 cartridges will have a small hole on top that can be accessed with a needle or syringe.

3. Fill the Syringe with Ink

Fill the syringe with the appropriate ink color for your cartridge. Be careful not to overfill the syringe; 3 – 4 ml of ink should be sufficient for most cartridges. Larger cartridges can take up double up to 8ml

4. Inject the Ink

Slowly inject the ink into the cartridge. Insert the needle into the refill hole and gently press down on the syringe plunger. Be careful not to overfill the cartridge. You should stop as soon as you feel resistance or see ink beginning to come out of the hole.

5. Seal the Hole

If you had to create a refill hole, seal it with a small piece of tape or the seal provided in the refill kit. Make sure it’s secure to prevent leaks.

6. Clean the Cartridge

Use a lint-free cloth and contact cleaner, isopropyl alcohol, or rubbing alcohol to gently clean the print head and any ink that may have spilled on the cartridge. This ensures that the ink flow is not obstructed and prevents any dried ink from causing print quality issues.

7. Reinstall the Cartridge

Carefully reinstall the cartridge into your printer. Run a test print to make sure everything is working correctly. If the print quality is not as expected, run the printer’s cleaning cycle a few times.

Tips to Avoid Overfilling

  • Use a syringe with a measurement scale to control the amount of ink you’re injecting.
  • Always stop when you feel resistance or see ink seeping out.
  • Start with less ink; you can always add more if needed.

Cleaning the Print Head

Cleaning the print head is crucial for maintaining print quality. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Remove the Cartridge: Take out the cartridge and place it on a paper towel.
  2. Apply Cleaner: Dampen a lint-free cloth with contact cleaner, isopropyl alcohol, or rubbing alcohol.
  3. Clean the Print Head: Gently wipe the print head with the cloth. Avoid using too much force as this can damage the delicate print head.
  4. Dry and Reinstall: Let the print head dry completely before reinstalling the cartridge.
